NY Attorney General Intends to Sue Arbitron
The article Attorney General Intends to Sue Arbitron Over PPM, is about the action of New York Attorney General filing a lawsuit against Arbitron , October 3, 2008, regarding the Portable People Meter being used in New York City. A Portable People Meter is a electronic device that is a size of a cell phone or a pager, and is in regards to recording all daily electronic listening for several months, (pg 52, text). It’s main goal is to get monthly rating reports for the top ten United States Markets. Arbitron was accused of giving a misleading representation and impression of how they get their ratings.
Attorney General, Cuomo felt that the Portable People Meter was unfair, unreliable, and doesn’t fully represent the diversity of New York radio markets. In addition, Arbitron is being held accountable for trying to launch the Portable People Meter in seven other markets without addressing any methodological flaws that may impact racial and ethic minorities, which is a violation of the New York Civil Rights Law.
Arbitron is facing lawsuit for not giving out the correct data about how they obtain and keep up their ratings. Arbitron’s entire company is in stake of their good name and standing as being one of the best rating radio companies. If the lawsuit goes further, Arbitron will be faced with being known as deceptive and unlawful with marketing and planning commercialization in New York of the Portable People Meter methodology.
This article was chosen because Arbitron is known to be one of the best rating companies for radio. It has been around for years and it is shocking that they have a lawsuit being enforced upon them. It makes a person wonder will Arbitron be able to defeat the lawsuit against them by Attorney General Cuomo, due to the fact that they are a notable company that has been around for so long. However, this article insights the issues that the Portable People Meter is causing. While Arbitron fights the case, they will be in risk of losing their fairly new electronic device. The People Meter has made many improvements over the years. It has been able to give data back in a timely fashion with more data insights. Insights have shown the progression and success by many radio programmers including those in Urban and Spanish communities.
This article relates to chapter two, page fifty one and fifty-two. In the text book, it mentions how there were experiments with the Portable People Meter and that they were going to expand in the markets of Houston, Philadelphia, New York, and other major markets. We are able to see that the Portable People Meter made their goal using this product in New York and were recently about to launch the meter in Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco to name a few. The book explains how the Portable People Meter was slow prior to the year of 2007, and how much funding went into it making Arbitron a competing company. Reading information from the text, one can see how much the Portable People Meter has grown and has continue to grow. Arbitron has come a long way in pushing their electronic device to sell in major markets. It makes a person think if their lawsuit is not beaten, how much will the Portable People Meter shamble into pieces.
