More Online Journalists Than Print Journalists Behind Bars

http://tech.yahoo.com/news/afp/20081204/tc_afp/usmediajusticerightsinternetcpj

The article, More Online Print Journalists Than Print Journalists Behind Bars is about how many journalists who do their work in the digital era nowadays are being jailed all around the world more than any other journalist from any other medium. Most of these journalists are bloggers, web-based reporters, online editors, and even freelancers. The Committee to Protect Journalists(CPJ) predicts that print reporters, editors, and photographers are the next largest category of jailed journalists and behind them are radio journalists, and documentary film makers. The future of journalism is now online and there is a battle with press freedom. New online journalists have captured attention from repressive governments around the world, and they feel that there should be a limit to how much freedom a journalist should actually say, especially online.

This article relates to Broadcast Programming because journalism is really important to the media industry itself. Most stories are communicated from journalists in all areas. Since online media is rapidly growing and is still considered the future due to the fact that it's fairly new, it is going to be a huge concern in the media industry. Journalists getting locked up could be a set back for media or may prohibit journalism to grow online. Everything nowadays is going digital and for broadcasting, this is something that people who work in this field are paying very closely to. In the history of broadcasting, a lot of reporters have been jailed because of the things they may of said in print. For this same thing to continue online is what makes this article so relative. People have not changed through the years of what should be the limit of "freedom of speech" and "freedom of the press".

This article was chosen because 125 journalists were jailed recently in the year of 2008. This may allow online journalists to ask themselves, "What is too wrong to say in my article online?". This may set the online journalist industry back or enhance it. The reason this could be a set back is because future journalists who may want to do work online might change their mind because of all the commotion. Someone may have a passion for writing, but are they going to get locked up for it? Also, it can be a set back because with the question just asked, who is really going to want to work online? Print is still being used, but the future is online. This could be a conflicting situation. In a more positive outlook, this problem may allow journalists to keep striving to make digital journalism a success. There is "freedom of speech" and also "freedom of the press" and if someone really does have a passion for writing whatever they want, they are going to do it anyway. This article was really interesting to read because it's something that a person has to think about who has this career. The fact that 125 online journalists are behind bars is striking, especially because digital is such a new medium compared to others.

More Online Journalists Than Print Journalists Behind Bars relates to Chapter 10 and Chapter 11 because online media is still steadily increasing. Although there are some difficulties with journalists getting locked up behind bars, it is still a new medium that the industry is still going to push to grow even more. Nowadays people are getting tired of print media and regardless of some of the problems that online journalism may run into or encounter, the future still lies ahead to have digital media a popular meduim, which it has already become.

BACK TO EARTH FOR WEB RADIO

http://www.nypost.com/seven/11142008/business/back_to_earth_for_web_radio_138675.htm

The article, "Back to Earth For Web Radio", is about how radio has made a change to enhance their listeners online. There has been an increase in audience on Yahoo, AOL, , and Clear Channel. They are also associated with streaming music. CBS has taken over online radio for AOL and there has been an increase from 1.9million listeners in August to 2.3 million listeners in September. Programmers are currently trying to find a way of how long listeners will have time to listen to music online. Clear Channel is also doing online radio and is trying to make online radio more effective by doing special premiers of music artists such as Beyonce and Guns and Roses. Special applications are being used for cell phones, such as iheartradio for iphones. There has been more than 300,000 downloads of this application which shows a high increase of audiences who are online. Abritron has been showing these ratings and the amount of people listening to online radio.

This article relates to broadcast programming because all media are going digital and this article is a example of how radio is trying to make a change keeping their ratings up. Radio is going downhill because of all new digital electronics such as itunes, ipods, the internet and more. This shows the improvement of how radio is going to keep its audience as a major media. Yahoo, ClearChannel, and AOL having online radio will attract more listeners, especially because they are popular websites that many people visit on a everday basis.

I chose this article becuase radio is steadly decreasing at this point of time. Online programming is taking over and I believe that radio online will increase the amount of listeners because people spend most of their time on the computer anyway. People go online all the time for music. Why not have radio online? It will be an extra site to go to, especially if you want to listen to a specific station that you normally listen to or a specific disc jocky. Also, people have the internet on their phones nowadays and the radio can be listened to over the phone. It can be carried anywhere from home, the car, a bus, train and more.

This article relates to Chapter 11 in the text book. In the chapter it talks about broadcast radio and the internet. It talks about how radio was slow to warm up to the online world. The simplist approach for many radio stations and networks was to merely repurpose their broadcast programming by streaming it online, commercials and all, (pg 343). This article has shown the steps of accomplishing what these radio stations and networks were trying to do. Broadcast radio is making its way to a new start to keep people listening the best way possible. Hopefully, online radio will be able to continue to have a growing audience so that it can to be a major media that everyone still likes to use and listen to.

Rethinking Blogs As a Medium for adsNew research says readers are swayed to Buy Products

The article, “Rethinking Blogs as medium for ads” talks about blogs becoming a new medium for readers to be swayed to buy products. According to Jupiter Research, marketers are missing a good way to sell their products. Jupiter Research conducted a study a study for Buzz Logic, which is an ad network. Their research says that blog readers find blogs useful for purchase information. Also, readers trust blogs more than social networking sites for influencing purchasing decisions, “forty percent of research said they prefer blog links over search engines for discovering new content”.
Rob Crumpler, chief executive office at Buzz Logic talked about advertisers changing attitudes toward blogs. In his interview, what he found most interesting was that the consumer search behavior is changing. A large part of today’s web audience consumes information online. Also, Crumpler stated that if the author relationship is strong, then media will have the most impact. Not to mention, blogs have matured and its context has more influence nowadays. Crumpler notes that blogs are an alternative traditional media in terms of news. One important fact is that people want media that they can trust or can at least create on their own.
This article was chosen because blogs are becoming a very popular medium. In fact, we use this form of media in class. We use blogging to communicate ideas, thoughts, and opinions on different topics. What makes blogging so interesting is that it has grown tremendously over the years. Through reading this article, it has gave insight to how much blogging will continue to grow. As a means of advertising, participants will engage more in blogging because of its popularity and will most likely be the best way of advertising.
This article relates to the text book on page 305. The text mentions how they would not be surprised if kids would not have time to watch plain old television. Blogging is one of the medias that is taking over with Myspace, Neopets, and Youtube. This relates because it shows how much participating is online. People are using online sources more and more everyday. With children, teens, and adults using blogs more often, the amount of advertisement will definitely go up because of how much participation there is.

Cut the Cord/ Thinking Out of the Box:Cable Free TV

http://www.nypost.com/seven/10162008/entertainment/cut_the_cord_133791.htm?page=2

The article, “Cut the Cord” is about how the future is dependant on online video and it will make watching television cheaper, easier and more diverse. Everything nowadays is becoming more digitalized, especially in the television industry. This article simply asks its readers, why pay for cable? People are using alternative ways to watch their favorite shows and movies. The first alternative is using the Internet with free download websites such as TidalTv.com and OVGuide.com just to name a few. In addition, television audiences also use videogame systems, DVD’s, ipods, and more. With all these other ways to watch television, it would be pointless for a customer to pay a cable provider every month. “Cut the Cord” truly gives ways of how to get rid of paying a cable bill.
According to a recent Neilson report, average American homes watch 16 out of 188 cable channels. There are so many channels on television, but there are so many channels for one topic. For instance, there are a lot of cooking channels. If we truly think about that, there really isn’t a need for so many of those channels. It seems as television is being wasted and audiences are going elsewhere to watch their favorite specific television shows they enjoy. For example, Genevieve Futrelle who is the VP of production at UGO Entertainment said she preferred watching DVD’s or online. People want things on their own demand. They like to watch things on their own time and usually don’t watch the majority shows they like on the actual night they are aired anyhow. Most networks are even streaming online for free.
If the increase of watching online video continues, there will be no need for cable at all. Cable providers will be putting their time, effort, and “smart” money into nothing. The money that they would put out, they wouldn’t get it back in return because people will drift from watching it, especially if they have to pay for something they can watch for free. Our technology is growing faster and it will only be a matter of time until it makes a complete change in the television industry.
I chose to write about this article because it was a very interesting topic and it is true. People do use online video a lot and alternative ways to watch television, especially our generation. The Internet is the major medium which people turn to for everything. This article could actually influence a reader not pay for cable who pays a high bill each month. In a personal view, DVD’s and other alternative ways to watch television programs are taking over. Things are not going to change over night, but over a period of time, cable will seem secondary.
There are several important insights. The first insight is the alternative ways to watch your favorite television programs and avoid paying a high cable bill. The article gave out a few download websites that you can watch shows for free, such as Family Guy episodes. Also, this article allows their readers to know how much people actually use these alternatives. Years ago people loved to sit and watch programs in front of the T.V screen. However, that era of lifestyle is currently changing and it is so interesting to see. Lastly, “Cut the Cord” gives insight to what television will be like in the future. The article mentions that the future is to link the Internet and T.V. For example, selling a box that streams video to your T.V. This gives readers a heads up to look for.
This article relates to chapter ten in the text book. On page 315, it mentions how parts of the Internet can be distributed to cell phones, also known as, “third screens”. Chapter ten explains that video entertainment has moved beyond than just being at home. For example, MobiTV offers its two million subscribers more than fifty channels of streamed live television that show up as large as cable nets such as Discovery, MSNBC, and CNBC to name a few. The entire chapter talks about online programming and ways it is being used. It relates to this article because people aren’t watching television in front of the cable set anymore. There are other ways to watch what you want on demand.

NY Attorney General Intends to Sue Arbitron
The article Attorney General Intends to Sue Arbitron Over PPM, is about the action of New York Attorney General filing a lawsuit against Arbitron , October 3, 2008, regarding the Portable People Meter being used in New York City. A Portable People Meter is a electronic device that is a size of a cell phone or a pager, and is in regards to recording all daily electronic listening for several months, (pg 52, text). It’s main goal is to get monthly rating reports for the top ten United States Markets. Arbitron was accused of giving a misleading representation and impression of how they get their ratings.
Attorney General, Cuomo felt that the Portable People Meter was unfair, unreliable, and doesn’t fully represent the diversity of New York radio markets. In addition, Arbitron is being held accountable for trying to launch the Portable People Meter in seven other markets without addressing any methodological flaws that may impact racial and ethic minorities, which is a violation of the New York Civil Rights Law.
Arbitron is facing lawsuit for not giving out the correct data about how they obtain and keep up their ratings. Arbitron’s entire company is in stake of their good name and standing as being one of the best rating radio companies. If the lawsuit goes further, Arbitron will be faced with being known as deceptive and unlawful with marketing and planning commercialization in New York of the Portable People Meter methodology.
This article was chosen because Arbitron is known to be one of the best rating companies for radio. It has been around for years and it is shocking that they have a lawsuit being enforced upon them. It makes a person wonder will Arbitron be able to defeat the lawsuit against them by Attorney General Cuomo, due to the fact that they are a notable company that has been around for so long. However, this article insights the issues that the Portable People Meter is causing. While Arbitron fights the case, they will be in risk of losing their fairly new electronic device. The People Meter has made many improvements over the years. It has been able to give data back in a timely fashion with more data insights. Insights have shown the progression and success by many radio programmers including those in Urban and Spanish communities.
This article relates to chapter two, page fifty one and fifty-two. In the text book, it mentions how there were experiments with the Portable People Meter and that they were going to expand in the markets of Houston, Philadelphia, New York, and other major markets. We are able to see that the Portable People Meter made their goal using this product in New York and were recently about to launch the meter in Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco to name a few. The book explains how the Portable People Meter was slow prior to the year of 2007, and how much funding went into it making Arbitron a competing company. Reading information from the text, one can see how much the Portable People Meter has grown and has continue to grow. Arbitron has come a long way in pushing their electronic device to sell in major markets. It makes a person think if their lawsuit is not beaten, how much will the Portable People Meter shamble into pieces.
